Incredibly well written and has a frankly baffling amount of heart hidden beneath its crummy exterior. If you spent time online in the 90s this will take you places you never knew you wanted to go so bad.. Hypnospace Outlaw is a triumph in game design, a wholly unique experience within the gaming space that may have kickstarted a new genre on its own. The development team figured out how to gamify the sense of wonder and discovery on the internet, bringing to life a virtual world that may seem reminiscent of a late 1990's world wide web, but in reality acts as its own original setting like an alternate history or timeline. Using this framework, they are able to evoke that sense of exploring a newfangled virtual landscape in an organic way, even for those of us who have been on the internet since the 90's. You'll encounter cheesy adlib-style music, quirky utilities and programs, webpage designs that will make your eyes bleed, Y2K references, angsty teen hackers and just about any other stereotypical quality you'd expect from the internet of this era. The authenticity is certainly a strength of the game's presentation, from the vibrant, life-like virtual characters to the suite of features available on the HypnOS desktop. The story localizes you to a certain set of virtual zones and contacts, keeping you grounded enough within your designated role in the virtual ecosystem and helping to prop up the grand illusion even moreso. You as the player serve as a virtual enforcer, reporting lewd, copyright infringing or otherwise rule breaking material to your superiors as you are assigned different cases. The earlier tasks aren't much more than small potatoes, but as you dig deeper and uncover more scandalous material, the intrigue heightens and the narrative kicks things into the next gear.As such, if you do choose to play Hynospace Outlaw, I highly recommend staying away from online guides, relying on your own wits and sleuthing abilities as much as possible. You can complete the game in 1-2 hours using a guide, but you'll miss out on everything the virtual space has to offer, and the feeling of solving a tough case using your own mental acuity is very satisfying. I admittedly did have to look up a solution or two, but with enough persistence, diligent attention and critical thinking, you should be able to solve everything this game throws at you. It's probably best not to dive too much further into the plot or details about the game, if this premise sounds good to you I highly recommend picking up Hynospace Outlaw at your earliest convenience. I paid the retail price ($20) and got about 10 hours of gameplay in my first playthrough, so depending on your game purchasing habits, you may want to wait for a sale on this one (though, I personally found the quality of gameplay and replay value worth the price). Regardless, for anybody who has a fondness for the internet and a particular nostalgia for the older forms of the world wide web, this game is an easy recommendation that will massage all the right areas of your entertainment palette.. Fantastic, absolutely fantastic. The way it recreated a pre-2000 AOL-style internet is fantastic. There's so much story and thought and love put into it and it makes me so happy. It's so accurate down to the crappy 3D animation, eye-bleeding page designs, and clueless old people.Pick up this game. There are no problems I can state. $22 CAD? Get outta here! Hypnospace Outlaw is a game about browsing the internet. Wait, you were expecting a comma after that, and instead I gave you a period?? I assure you, pal, that was not a mistake. If you're familiar with the good ol' days of the internet you'll probably find some entertainment out of going through different web pages, but the fake internet on display here should be the shell of a great game, not the entire game itself. The "find and report content violations" pretext is paper-thin and extremely straightforward, and while Hypnospace gives you a whiff of some sort of story it suddenly ends at what I thought was still part of the rising action. Personally, I was expecting the game to transition into a sort of commentary on the corporatization of the internet, because that thread is very clearly woven into everything and instead in the end it's just completely wasted. There are still relics of the old internet out there and you can always check those out, so without any extra bait on the line it's hard for me to justify the existence of Hypnospace. I could load up Worlds and see real things that real people made decades ago, which imo is much more interesting than a milky toast parody of Pokemon (it's Pokemon but wet, they don't even lean in to the obvious satanic angle).Taster's score: C-. I initally bought this game because the screenshots made me feel nostalgic for the wacky early days of the internet and having just finished it I have to say, surfing through some kind of geocities-like webspace to solve light hacking puzzles is an unexpectedly dank experience. I wish there were a few more cases to solve but the pseudo-internet they have built for this game is already super detailed and filled with custom songs, artworks and writing from a made-up alternate-history 1999, so I guess at some point they finally had to stop adding stuff which is fair enough. The gameplay to be honest isn't that strong on its own but if the screenshots look at all interesting to you, you should give it a try. A lot of the fun comes from just browsing HypnoSpace and discovering all the stories and secrets.. Be the Geocities moderator you've always aspired to be. Go through cringy blogs, bad gifs, old music and other sorts of outdated embarrassing stuff!9\/10
